Why does my cat bury his food?

In order to keep their food safe from predators, cats in the wild bury it so other cats cannot smell

it. It is beneficial in two ways: first, it makes it less probable for other cats to find the food, and

second, it helps to mask the scent from animals that hunt. Certain cats have an innate tendency to

bury their food, or at the very least, scratch the ground or attempt to cover it with a throw rug.

A lot of wild cats burrow food. Feces and other items that would indicate a cat was in the vicinity

are also buried by cats. A cat uses this defense mechanism to keep other predators away from him.
